India as a Luxury Travel Destination – Is it Worth It for Wildlife?

Hey guys,

I’ve been thinking about India as a place for luxury travel. Do you think it’s a great destination for that? What makes it stand out? And since it’s known for its wildlife, would you consider going there just for the wildlife experience?

I’m a wildlife photographer living in India and I’m curious about how people plan their luxury wildlife travels here.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

I went to Pench and stayed at Baghvan, A Taj Safari for 10 days.

It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. They had a private chef who catered to our every need. One day, I wanted some cookies, and even though they didn’t have any ready, they asked what kind I wanted and had them ready in 15 minutes.

They always asked us what we wanted to eat and made sure it was prepared exactly how we liked. For breakfast, they packed us a great meal for our early morning safaris. The Canter was private, with its own guide and driver.

The villas were amazing—only 12 in total—so every little detail was taken care of. The rooms were beautiful, and there was a machan on top of the room, which made you feel like you were living right in the forest.

The open-air shower area was a bit scary because of monkeys, but we were never harmed by any.

I would definitely return. We saw 8 tigers, one of which was only 3 meters away from us! We also saw 3 leopards and even watched a fight between two king cobras.

Did you plan your trip with someone, or did you book it yourself?

We booked it ourselves.

When it comes to wildlife, Madhya Pradesh in central India is definitely the place to be. You can find luxury accommodations in national park areas, where you can go on safaris every day. Since you’re looking for luxury, there are several options with great services and facilities. I’m based in M.P. and help plan trips for clients looking for luxury experiences. Bandhavgarh National Park, for example, has the highest density of tigers and a lot of other wildlife species.

Bandhavgarh is like my second home! I go there at least three times a year. The sightings there are incredible. Kanha is amazing too!

That’s awesome! What places are you exploring right now? Also, about your question on India as a luxury travel destination, while most people opt for a mid-range luxury experience, there’s a good number of folks who want a full-on luxury experience, with top-tier stays, food, activities, and comfort. They’re completely hooked on it.

I’m thinking about exploring some of the smaller reserves like Sanjay Dubri, Bori, etc. In your experience, which places do luxury travelers prefer in India?

Ranthambore, Jim Corbett, and Bandhavgarh are pretty popular for luxury travelers.

The smaller reserves you’re interested in are off the beaten path, less commercialized. If you want, I could help plan a trip to those places for you.

I actually went to India as part of a photography trip, with a group focused on wildlife. India was incredible for it. We went up to Ladakh and explored the region. We saw a lot of cool wildlife, including yaks and other animals.

Did you make it to Central India? It’s great for tigers and leopards. How was your time in Ladakh? Did you see any snow leopards?

No, I only went to Ladakh and Mumbai. I’d love to go back to India and explore more of the country. It was beautiful and I really enjoyed it.

I didn’t see any snow leopards, though. I looked, but they’re tough to find!

Yeah, they’re pretty elusive. What made you choose Ladakh for your trip?

Good question! My partner and his dad spent a lot of time there. I’m not really sure why they started going in the first place, though.

Nice! Ladakh is such a beautiful place.

You should think about Central India for wildlife photography. It’s one of the best spots out there!

Ladakh is one of my favorite places as well. The landscape and the whole region have something extra to offer, apart from just wildlife tours. If you’re planning any trips to India, I’d love to help you with it!
