What do you think are the details that can make a tourist island truly luxurious? I’m talking about the kind of things that make you think, ‘Wow, this is incredible!’ What little touches or experiences stand out to you?
Jeeps with park logos on them. Barbasol cans with hiding spots.
It depends on the location. In the Pacific, it’s not common to have full-time staff. But in East Asia, it’s pretty common to have a designated staff member you can contact via WhatsApp or a phone call. Also, all-inclusive options for spa treatments are a must. And the booking for those should be automatic so you don’t have to wake up at 8:00 am during your vacation and still miss out. Another thing is a 24/7 helpdesk—nothing worse than needing housekeeping after 6 pm when they’re already gone. Having DJs, not just playlists, for parties is also a plus. Getting laundry done the same day or even faster if it’s just ironing would be great too. And having the schedules of events and activities beforehand, with reservations for guests, would definitely add to the luxury vibe.
Being able to arrive or depart by private boat, sea plane, or helicopter. For example, the new One and Only Resort on Kea Island, you arrive by speedboat or helicopter directly to the hotel.
We arrived by speedboat at a resort in Koh Phangan. There was no pier, and we jumped barefoot into the water with the team carrying our luggage overhead. The GM and the team gave us a welcome at the beach. It was my favorite arrival ever.
Wow, that’s cool! What resort was it?
