Anyone got some good ideas for things to do or see? I’m taking my mom on Uncruise and want to find some fun activities before or after the boat trip that don’t overlap with our cruise itinerary.
My mom isn’t really into fancy stuff, but I like more unique experiences rather than typical ones. We wouldn’t enjoy lounging at a fancy spa like O&O or Waldorf. That wouldn’t work for this mother-son trip.
Right now, I’m considering:
Staying at an Airbnb near Flora Farms and checking out what they offer, like farm tours or meals while we’re there.
Thinking about a half-day trip to Todos Santos for lunch and exploring. Is there anything to do there? Is it worth it?
We’ll need to get to La Paz for the cruise, so if there’s anything cool to see or do around there, let me know.
I’m open to cooking classes, guided tours, ebike tours, or anything unique and engaging.
That time of year in that area is fantastic for aquatic life. You should try a whale watching tour from Cabo. I’ve seen whales breach there like nowhere else. And swimming with whale sharks in La Paz is amazing too! It’s easy and super fun.
We’ve traveled a lot, but those experiences there are unforgettable.
Awesome! You can choose between a boat with around 8 people or charter your own. We went with our kids, and it was great to have more chances to swim with the whale sharks.
I’d fly into SJD and rent a car one way to La Paz, staying one night in Todos Santos. You can drop the car off in town in La Paz, which is convenient. Todos Santos has all kinds of places to stay, from resort-style to more casual spots. Given that you posted this in this forum, I assume you like luxury, but is it that your mom dislikes fancy resorts like O&O/Waldorf, or is it mostly about the cost? If it’s just about the pretentious vibe, check out the tented cabins at Villa Santa Cruz or the new Hotel Todos Santos, which has a cool cocktail bar. Todos is great for exploring, and you can find stunning beaches and hidden gems. You should also visit Green Room, a fantastic beach bar nearby.
For something active, there are hiking, biking, and surfing options. Mario Surf School is great for beginners. If you have time, check out El Triunfo, an old mining town worth a quick visit.
What time of year are you visiting? If it’s November to April, consider staying in La Paz for a night and going on a whale shark boat tour. I know you’ll be on a boat for part of your trip, but it doesn’t mention whale sharks in your itinerary. If you do stay in La Paz, try out the Baja Club Hotel. It’s a cute town, mostly locals with some tourists, and walking the Malecon is enjoyable with lots to see.
We’ll likely land at CSL airport. Do you know of any rental car companies that can drop the car off at our cruise departure? I’d rather avoid the hassle of an Uber or taxi to the rental place. A one-way rental seems like the way to go.
When you asked about my mom, it’s mostly about how pretentious places make her feel. I’m okay with the cost since I’ll be covering it. I just want her to feel comfortable and have a special trip without it being too generic. I like unique hotels or Airbnbs even if they’re not super luxurious.
Should I spend one night in Todos Santos or stay near Flora Farms and then go to Todos for a half or three-quarters of a day? I’ve heard great things about Flora, but I’ve also heard Todos can be small and boring. Everyone has different opinions, though.
I’m not sure about car rentals that deliver to your location. You might have limited options for one-way rentals that drop off in La Paz. Maybe someone else on this forum has better info. Otherwise, consider hiring a driver to La Paz.
Flora Farms is nice; I’ve been there for weddings. It’s a popular spot, but it feels genuine to me. The food and atmosphere are great. It’s only about 10-15 minutes from San Jose, but staying in an Airbnb there might feel isolated unless it’s on the Flora Farms property.
I really love Todos Santos. The whole area has a farm-to-table vibe, which is fantastic. If I had to pick between the two, I’d choose Todos. There’s so much good food and cool architecture, plus a beautiful beach with dramatic waves. I get why some people think they could get bored after half a day, especially if they only explore the tourist spots. But if you spend a day, you’ll have a different experience.
Based on what you and your mom like, I’d suggest staying at Villa Santa Cruz. You could do happy hour at Green Room, then have the hotel call a taxi for dinner. Or stay at Hotel Todos Santos, head to Green Room for sunset, then back to town for dinner. Either way, it should be a blast.
Any recommendations for cooking classes, farm tours, or other activities on the day I arrive? I plan to land at CSL around 1 PM and would love to do something like a cooking class or farm tour before checking into Villa Santa Cruz, which looks perfect! I’d like suggestions either in Cabo San Lucas or on the way to Todos Santos.
Not a tour, but Agricole is right on the way to Todos and has a great market with their own farmed products and quality imports. It’s a good spot to grab snacks for the cruise.
You should also check out a taco tour in Todos. I can’t recall the name of the one I used, but I know Villa Santa Cruz can set one up.
Paradero is another cool hotel nearby (but may not fit your mom’s vibe), and they offer cooking classes and farm tours for overnight guests. I’m not sure if they offer them separately, but it might be worth asking. Sorry, I’m not familiar with more cooking class options!
